Drip Machine

Best Drip Coffee Maker 2016

Looking for advice on the best drip coffee maker? This is my article in which I talk about drip machines more in depth, explain what they do and offer tips on choosing the right one for you.

When people talk of coffee machines, there’s a good chance that they’re referring to the drip coffee maker. The drip (sometimes called an auto-drip or automatic drip) works by pouring hot water through ground coffee beans, absorbing all of the flavors, compounds and essential oils and then flowing through a filter and into a carafe which come in different materials and sizes.

One of the main advantages of a drip coffee maker is the fact that they’re able to brew a large amount of coffee in a short time, and are the most suitable when brewing for a large amount of people, or if you’re just somebody who drinks a lot of coffee throughout the day.

Factors to Consider

Cup Size

Drip coffee makers come in all shapes and sizes, and the size of the carafe determines how many cups you can brew at any one time. They generally range from 1-14 cup brewing capability so you should take into account how many cups you typically will want to brew when deciding on an auto-drip to buy.

Price

Since there is quite a wide range of prices when it comes to auto-drip makers, I would advise deciding on a budget when considering your purchase. Like with most things, the more you pay will get you a higher quality product with more added features, but it might be that you’re a beginner to coffee making and are looking for something a little more simple and affordable.

Durability

Some of these coffee makers are built to last better than others. It’s worth taking this into account before committing to a purchase. While it can be tempting to buy cheaper models, sometimes this doesn’t actually work out the cheapest option when you take into account durability and need for replacements over time. Many things can factor into the durability of an auto-drip coffee maker such as the frame material and the type of carafe (usually glass or thermal.)

In my opinion this is the best drip coffee maker on the market. It offers wonderful tasting coffee literally at the touch of a button and takes just minutes to brew. This is the coffee maker I use at home on a day-to-day basis.

The incredibly powerful 1500-watt heater maintains a steady optimal brewing temperature of 195-205F. This keeps the coffee hot to a satisfactory level for quite a long time. There is also the optional pre-infusion function that wets the coffee and allows for degassing prior to brewing.

The thermal, stainless steel carafe is practically unbreakable and is designed magnificently to prevent all spillages. The BV1900TS is ideal for both the beginner and the connoisseur, and the user-friendly design is easily mastered even if you’ve never owned a similar product.

This coffee maker really produces one of the best tasting cups of coffee I’ve ever drank. If you’re a fan of super rich coffee which has no bitter or acidic after taste, this is perfect for you. On top of all this, Bonavita have some of the best customer service I’ve ever known. Moccamaster KBT 10-Cup Coffee Brewer
Moccamaster KBT Best Drip Coffee Maker

Check price on Moccamaster KBT 10-Cup Coffee Brewer

The KBT from Moccamaster is a 10-cup brewer that features a manual drip-stop basket and a high quality, durable stainless steel thermal carafe. Similar to the BV1900TS it brews at 196-205F and has a pulse action feature which guarantees a consistent coffee bloom during extraction.

Whilst a little pricier than some other machines, if you’re serious about coffee and have money to spend this is well worth the investment. Using a super high quality bean in conjunction with the Moccamaster KBT is arguably the finest way you can drink coffee using a home auto-drip machine.

The coffee is brewed consistently at the correct temperature as stated (unlike some lower end models) and will be kept hot for hours after brewing.

It looks very attractive and adds flair to a kitchen. On top of that has one of the most robust designs I’ve seen on a drip coffee maker. I haven’t owned one for a long period of time, but I know many people who have and they say that it’s the longest lasting drip machine they’ve ever had and well worth the investment.

Conair Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew Thermal 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker
Cuisinart DGB-900BC Best Drip Coffee Maker

Check price on Conair Cuisinart DGB-900BC

The standout feature of this Conair Cuisinart DGB-900BC is the fact that it comes equipped with a built-in 8oz bean hopper and burr grinder which can be adjusted for both strength and grind control.

It is perfect for beginners, coming with 3 strength settings (mild, medium and strong.) Users are also able to select how many cups they would like to brew. The heated base warms the thermal carafe when the machine is switched on, allowing the coffee to stay hotter for longer even if cold milk is added to the carafe.

All parts are well-made and for an all-in-one machine which has many removable parts like the hopper and the grind basket. It is remarkably easy to clean and nowhere near as finicky as coffee makers of this type can sometimes be.

If you don’t already own a coffee grinder, and would rather buy a drip coffee maker which has one incorporated for convenience, the DGB-900BC is undoubtedly the best drip coffee maker with agrind and brew system I know of. The only downside is that the built-in grinder doesn’t come close in quality to some of the better grinders you can buy separately, so this might be a consideration. If you already own a good coffee grinder or are interested in purchasing one you’re probably better off avoiding this coffee maker.

Pros

Pro Built-in burr grinder for bean to cup experience
Pro Good temperature control
Pro User-friendly and intuitive for beginners
Pro Fully programmable

Cons

Cancel Unable to select coarseness of grind
Cancel Water indicator is in an awkward position

Mr. Coffee PSTX91 Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffee Maker
Mr. Coffee PSTX91 Best Drip Coffee Maker

Check price on Mr. Coffee PSTX91

The Mr. Coffee PSTX91 is the most affordable drip coffee maker mentioned in this guide. As such, it is simpler and less robust than others. However, for a beginner coffee maker it is suitable for the job.

It is a thermal coffee maker, which means that the coffee is dripped into a carafe that acts like a big thermos. This keeps the coffee well heated for a very long time after brewing. Coffee can be kept at a reasonably hot temperature for as long as 4 hours which is perfect for people who like to take time between cups. It has all the standard features you would expect to find in a good drip coffee maker – a removable water reservoir, an auto-off function and a water filtration system just to name a few.

The PSTX91 is definitely a competent auto-drip maker which can brew a decent cup of coffee, but for more advanced drinkers looking for something higher quality it’s probably worth splurging a little more on a higher end coffee maker.

Pros

Pro Best drip coffee maker for affordability
Pro Includes freshness timer
Pro Outstanding heat retention
Pro Energy efficient

Cons

Cancel May need to be cleaned out a few times before use
Cancel Not as sturdy and leak-proof as other machines

Conclusion

You really get what you pay for as far as finding the best drip coffee maker. Higher end machines are sure to boast more features and more reliability than a cheaper one. In my opinion, for the absolute best price to quality ratio the Bonavita BV1900TS can’t be matched. For me, it is the best drip coffee maker available. However if this is above the budget you set absolutely any of the coffee makers mentioned on this page work splendidly and are amongst the best you can buy.

One last thing to mention is that unless you buy a grind and brew machine with a built-in grinder, you will surely want to purchase a good quality grinder to go with the drip machine. For this, I highly recommend the Capresso 560.01 Infinity Burr Grinder.

This is the grinder I use at home and is the best one I have ever owned. It works perfectly and consistently every time.
