Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine Review
When looking for an espresso machine, you want something that’s built to last. The Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine fits this description. Its classic, strong linear housing made from an iron frame and featuring stainless steel components is not only durable but also looks stunning. The beautiful design means that it adds glamor to just about any decor.
It comes fitted with Rancilio’s commercial grade group head to ensure maximum stability when it comes to heat levels and excellent extraction quality. Perhaps one of the finest things about the Rancilio Silvia is its patented ergonomic 58mm portafilter which is in my opinion the best of its kind at this price range.
The Rancilio Silvia single boiler contains the largest volume capacity found in a home espresso machine single boiler. It features a massive 12oz capacity in the boiler which is made of brass and features ornate chrome plating. This means that the espresso machine produces unbelievable steaming power and also superb instant recovery time between every shot.
The water reservoir holds 2 quarts and whilst some users have complained, I have personally found this reservoir to be perfectly adequate for home use. The great thing about it is that it can be removed easily from the top and can also be refilled during the espresso making process.
I’ve used espresso machines in the past which came with steaming wands that were annoyingly limited and inflexible, but that is never a problem with the Rancilio Silvia. The stainless steel steaming wand on this model is completely articulating and offers a full range of motion and also features the Rancilio commercial grade steam knob to control the steaming pressure.
Reasons to Buy the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine
In terms of value for money, I believe the Rancilio Silvia to be the best semi automatic espresso machine for home on the market. When used with a good premium quality grinder such as the Rancilio HSD-ROC-SD Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder this machine produces a superior cup of espresso with absolutely no trace of bitterness. Making microfoam with the Rancilio Silvia is also painless.
It also has a three way solenoid valve which for me is an absolute must. This allows pressure to escape from the basket when the pump is switched off so that your grounds fall out of the portafilter handle as a solid cake rather than a goopy mess. This honestly makes the experience so much easier and more care-free and if you hate cleaning this is an absolute life-saver.
If you know what you’re doing there is no reason why you can’t make espresso of commercial, coffee shop quality with the Rancilio Silvia from the comfort of your own home. As I mentioned above, to get the most out of this system you should definitely invest in a top of the range grinder. The grinder I use with my Rancilio Silvia is the Rancilio Rocky and I wouldn’t recommend anything less if you’re really serious about your espresso.
The only major downside to the Rancilio Silvia is the lack of a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) mechanism for controlling the boiler heating element, although if you wish to install one, like I have, this can be done. This really unlocks the maximum potential out of the Silvia.
